Transferring DV video via Firewire is just that - it transfers the actual data on the tape, without any loss of quality. To maintain this full quality, you might like to consider finding an old desktop PC with a Firewire port - or fit a Firewire card to an old desktop Firewire cards are still quite cheap Once you have the DV data transferred, you can then copy those files onto your laptop - via USB - for further editing and archiving - So the desktop is just used for 'capturing' transferring from the tapes.
You can capture directly to your laptop from the composite AV output connector of the camcorder, using a USB capture device - like those from EZCapTV - but you will lose some quality doing it that way. Everything was fine until I changed to 64 bit mode. I am going to reinstall W7 to see if it will work in 32 bit mode. I had no problems with XP, but I upgraded my software and now I can't capture from the ieee port.
No recognition. I hate to go to all that trouble because I have so much software loaded. I think I will by a new hardrive and try it out before I dump everything for one problem. I have a similar problem to Hamish I have been editing video for years and now I can't capture from any of my devices. In a day or so, I will let you know what happens. I am also thinking about getting another card, but none seem to be W7 specific.
They all say, XP, Vista, or older All of the compatibility checks I have done say the driver should work for 32 and 64 bit, no change required. But, something is wrong. It looks like your problem is similar, but differs from the original question.
